Background of the Study
In recent years, online shopping has seen exponential growth across the globe, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria. The increasing availability of smartphones, better internet access, and the convenience of shopping from home have driven a shift in consumer behavior towards online platforms. In Kebbi State, this trend has been noticeable, particularly among urban dwellers. However, there is limited research on how the rise of online shopping is affecting physical retail store sales in the state. As more consumers turn to digital platforms for their shopping needs, traditional brick-and-mortar stores may face challenges in maintaining their market share. This study aims to investigate the impact of online shopping trends on physical retail store sales in Kebbi State.

Statement of the Problem
While online shopping is gaining popularity, physical retail stores in Kebbi State continue to face declining sales and reduced foot traffic. Many retail businesses in the state struggle to adapt to the growing demand for online shopping, and this has raised concerns about their survival and competitiveness. Despite the growing importance of online shopping, the effects on physical retail store sales remain unclear, with some studies suggesting a negative impact on in-store purchases. This study aims to explore this issue in Kebbi State and assess the effects of online shopping trends on local retailers' sales and overall business performance.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To investigate the online shopping trends in Kebbi State and their impact on physical retail store sales.

  2. To evaluate how retailers in Kebbi State perceive the effects of online shopping on their sales performance.

  3. To assess the strategies employed by physical retail stores to cope with the rise of online shopping.

Research Questions

  1. What are the key online shopping trends observed in Kebbi State?

  2. How has the rise of online shopping affected the sales performance of physical retail stores in Kebbi State?

  3. What strategies have retailers in Kebbi State employed to adapt to the growing online shopping trend?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The rise of online shopping negatively affects the sales performance of physical retail stores in Kebbi State.

  2. Retailers who adopt online sales platforms experience better sales performance compared to those that rely solely on physical stores.

  3. The increased use of online shopping by consumers in Kebbi State is linked to a decline in foot traffic to physical retail stores.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on retailers in Kebbi State, particularly those operating physical stores, and will examine the effects of online shopping on their sales. The study's limitations may include challenges in obtaining sales data from retailers, especially proprietary information, and the difficulty of accurately measuring consumer behaviors related to online shopping.
